This beautiful, well-kept cemetery is one of the oldest in Ormond Beach. John Andrew Bostrom, thought to be Ormond Beach’s first settler and his brother Charles homesteaded the land located on the east side of the Halifax River circa 1868. The Bostroms donated the cemetery land in the 1870s, but no deed was formally granted until October 1, 1896. Not much more is known about the founding of the cemetery which occupies slightly more than five acres of land.
In May of 1998, Hillside Cemetery was placed on the City's Local Landmarks List. The application presented to the Historic Landmark Preservation Board stated: "Hillside Cemetery as a site is reflective of the cultural and social history of the community and is identified as the final resting place of both common and historical persons linked to the history of Ormond Beach." While neither the city of Ormond Beach nor Volusia County is involved in the ownership, maintenance, or operation of the cemetery, the volunteer Board of Trustees of the Hillside Cemetery Association has been overseeing the upkeep and preservation since its inception in 1994. The cemetery still has a limited number of grave sites for in ground interment of traditional caskets and cremains available for purchase.
The Hillside Angels, a volunteer arm of the board raises awareness and funds for the upkeep of these hallowed grounds. Donations are always welcome and appreciated.
